Problem

Possible Cause

Correction

Mask leaks.
Skin irritation.
Pressure sores or blisters.

  1. Strap adjustment too loose or too tight.
  2. Incorrect mask size.
  3. Worn-out mask.
  4. Dirty mask

 

  1. Readjust headgear straps. Mask should be as loose as possible while maintaining a seal.
  2. Consult clinician for alternate mask fitting.
  3. Replace mask if stiff, cracked or broken.
  4. Wash mask daily; wash face nightly.

Dry nose and/or throat.
Nasal congestion
Bloody Nose

  1. Dry air.
  1. Add or increase heated humidification.
  2. Try saline nasal spray before bedtime and upon awakening.
  3. May have some desensitization over time.
  4. Consult physician if symptoms persist.

Dry mouth

  1. Sleeping with mouth open.
  1. Add or increase heated humidification.
  2. Try a chin strap.
  3. If not resolved, a full-face mask may be considered.

Sore, dry, irritated or swollen eyes; conjunctivitis

  1. Mask leaks.
  2. Mask too tight.

 

  1. Try reseating mask on face.
  2. Readjust headgear straps.
  3. Replace mask if stiff, cracked or broken.
  4. Use an eye patch.

Rhinorrhea

  1. Dry air.
  1. Add or increase heated humidification.
  2. Try saline nasal spray before bedtime.

Allergic Rhinitis

  1. Irritants drawn in with room air through machine.

 

  1. Add or increase heated humidification.
  2. Place unit on bedside table to keep dust and/or animal hairs out of machine.
  3. Consult clinician: a fine particulate filter can be added to some units.
  4. Consult physician if symptoms persist.

Chest discomfort
Air swallowing
Sinus discomfort
Difficulty exhaling

  1. Pressure requirement may be lower at beginning of sleep period.
  2. Initial adjustment period.

 

  1. Activate ramp at beginning of sleep period.
  2. Add or increase heated humidification.
  3. Switch to CFlex, EPR or BiLevel therapy.

Recurrent snoring/sleep apnea symptoms

  1. Alcohol ingestion.
  2. Weight gain
  3. Inadequate pressure setting

 

  1. Avoid alcohol use.
  2. Work at weight loss.
  3. Consult physician for possible pressure adjustment.

Air flow seems unusually warm or hot.

  1. Filter may be obstructed.
  2. Air intake may be blocked by bedding, curtains, etc.
  3. Heater on without water.

 

  1. Clean or replace filter.
  2. Make sure air intake is clear and unobstructed.
  3. Fill humidifier chamber and adjust heater setting appropriately.
